Gaggle Apps
Gaggle has some great tools that students can use here at school and from home. In addition to mail, other apps include a social wall, blog, calendar, digital locker, discussion board where you can set up class discussions for your students, and gaggletube where you can approve videos from Youtube that students can watch here at school. All these tools are "filtered" so they are a safe haven where students can interact within the confines of the district's intranet. If you need help using any of these tools or would like to learn more, please contact Kristi DeBruyne.
Overdue Books and Fines
We will be working hard during April and May to clear up all library fines and overdues. Please remind students to take care of their responsibilities. We are plotting a homeroom competition to see if we can entice students to have clear fines before the last week of school. Ideas are welcome.
Free Choice Reading
Wendy Budimlija and Pat Eloranta spoke about our the MASH Free Choice Reading program at a conference in early April.

Budget Time
Everyone will soon be working on classroom budgets. Our library can help meet your need for new books, reference books, professional materials, videos and equipment. Please let us know what you would like to see in the MASH library. We will do our best to order what you need. If the materials are ordered through the library budget, they will be cataloged and circulate through our system.
Inventory
Our MASH Library recently completed an inventory of all materials. We continue to lose very few items each year, even with the increase in circulation. This year 31 items are reported missing, and five have found their way back to the library in the past two weeks. Currently only 26 items are missing. Please check the list posted on the bulletin board in the back of the library near the small copier. If you happen to have or see any of these items, please return them.
Computer Lab Signups 2nd Semester
You are reminded to use Google Calendar to sign up for computer labs at MASH. This semester, the Mac lab in Room 215 is reserved for the Digital Art class during 8th Hour. Please talk to Jill Fortin if you need to use the lab on a particular day, as she can be flexible. Lab scheduling information is available on the MASH web site--School Info page at: http://www2.medford.k12.wi.us:8400/SchoolInfo/schoolinfo.htm
Free Choice Reading
Pat Eloranta and Wendy Budimlija are preparing to present a session on MASH Free-Choice Reading at the WEMTA (Wisconsin Educational Media Technology Association) Conference in early April. Do you see students reading when they have a moment to spare? Are kids recommending books to you? Have you overheard students suggesting books to each other? Are you reading more books? Feel free to share these reading habit observations with us to include in our presentation.

Project Links
Avoid research frustration when you are working on class projects. See Pat to have llinks added to the Current Projects Page for the sources you need. Badgerlink articles can also be linked webpages and provide current, reliable sources.
New Year, New Look
Facts on File Word News Digest will have a fresh look this January. This still a great resource for world news, particularly politics, environment, and historical (back to 1940). Take sneak peek here.
CCC! Streaming Video Content
We are testing a new way to deliver high quality, curriculum rich video to your classroom. Selected departments are previewing a service that streams video to your desktop. An annual subscription would provide this for our whole building and you would be able to search and show videos that are produced for education. No more VHS or DVDs, no more sorting through youtube. We will be testing this until January 1 and have a limited number of logins for previewing. Please see Pat if you are interested in trying out this resource. Learn more here.
New Lincoln Library of Sports Edition
We recently ordered a new edition of Lincoln Library of Sports Champions in print and have access to the online site free. Locate the resource on the new Internet Start Page, click on Online Resources/News/Specialized, or click here. See the library staff for the login and password.
Kids Clamor for Books
Thanks to Free Choice Reading @ MASH for causing a stir when new books arrive. The recent shipment resulted in many holds and "I get it first" responses. No better way to make Library Media Specialist smile.
Align by Design Affects Technology Offerings @ MASH
Align by Design has been approved at MASH. Along with course changes in the core curriculum, Computer Systems, which has been a required course for over a decade, will be replaced by Financial Literacy starting in 2013-14. This new Financial Literacy course will be a graduation requirement for all seniors, and Computer Systems will be an elective beginning with the Class of 2017. A myriad of technology/computer science courses will continue to be offered to high school students, allowing them to focus on specific areas of technology like: programming, web design, networking, hardware, business applications, and web tools. Specific graduation requirements will be published in the 2013-14 MASH Scheduling Handbook.

New Reading Area
The new reading area has created some excitement at MASH. Students with books in hand are flocking to the comfy seating much of the day. You may send students from class to use the area when they have reading to do. Once the seating is full, they will have to settle for our old chairs.
We can't help but smile when we see all the readers!

Library Club Snack Sale
The Library Club will again have snacks for sale in the Library workroom. Stop by when you need a treat. We just replenished with a load of regular, peanut and peanut butter M & Ms. All items still only $1.00
New Internet Start Page
Last spring we updated the Internet Start Page to a cleaner style with pull-down menus. Check out the new version here.
While we transitioning to the new page, the old page is still available, with a link to the new page in the upper left. The library desktop computers display the new page as a homepage. Eventually the old page will be deleted.
Look for the new Teacher'sPage with links to our Technology Teasers, the quarterly newsletter, Movie Licensing USA (see Pat for password), web resources and more. We will be featuring the new site in our Technology Teaser on October 17.
